The Role of Lace in Modern Wedding Gowns

Lace has long been associated with romance, elegance, and timeless beauty, making it one of the most beloved fabrics in bridal fashion. Whether gracing the bodice, trailing down the skirt, or delicately edging a veil, lace brings an air of sophistication and femininity to any wedding gown. Today, modern bridal designers continue to incorporate lace into their creations in innovative ways, balancing tradition with contemporary aesthetics.

Sheet Lace vs. Lace Appliqué

Lace can be integrated into a wedding dress in various forms, with two of the most common techniques being sheet lace and lace appliqué.

  • Sheet Lace is a continuous fabric of lace that covers large portions, if not the entirety, of the dress. It can be layered over a solid fabric like satin or crepe for contrast or used on its own for a more ethereal effect. Dresses with sheet lace often have a vintage or bohemian feel, offering full-coverage beauty with intricate detailing.  In the coming weeks, we will be bringing in this coveted gown from Elena Morar's newest "Mryia" collection.  This sheet lace gown gives a nod to the Victorian era with the high neck and flounce at the wrist of the sleeves.

Lace Appliqué involves individual lace motifs being hand-sewn or machine-stitched onto the fabric of the gown. This technique allows for greater control over lace placement, creating a more customized and dimensional look. Lace appliqué is frequently seen on illusion bodices and cascading down skirts, adding a delicate, artistic touch.   In the example below from our Eternal Romance private label collection, floral lace appliques are arranged to make a bold, romantic statement.

Among the many types of lace available, French lace—particularly Alençon lace—is considered one of the finest and most luxurious options. Originating from France, Alençon lace is characterized by its delicate floral patterns and intricate needlework, often outlined with fine corded detail to create a slightly raised, textured effect. Known for its durability and refined craftsmanship, Alençon lace has been a staple in high-end bridal fashion for centuries and remains a popular choice for brides seeking an elegant, classic look.

Lace and the Cost of a Wedding Dress

While lace undoubtedly adds beauty and romance to a gown, it can also significantly impact the price of a wedding dress. Handmade and high-quality laces, such as Alençon or Chantilly lace, are more labor-intensive to produce and therefore tend to be more expensive. Additionally, dresses featuring intricate lace appliqué require skilled craftsmanship, which adds to the overall cost. Conversely, machine-made lace or more simplified lace designs can offer a similar aesthetic at a more budget-friendly price. Brides looking for a lace gown should consider their budget and explore different lace styles to find the perfect balance between elegance and affordability.

    Timeless Romance for Every Bride

Regardless of the type, lace remains a staple in bridal fashion for its ability to evoke a sense of timeless romance. Whether adorning a sleek modern silhouette or enhancing a voluminous ball gown, lace elevates a wedding dress with its intricate beauty and delicate charm. From classic vintage styles to contemporary designs, lace continues to captivate brides, ensuring that this beloved fabric will never go out of style.
